BACHELOR OF ENGLISH PHILOLOGY EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM
Program details:
- Right at the start of the semester students will get familiar with the field of business analytics, Students will learn to solve business problems by combining data analytics and mathematical modelling geared toward practice.
- As business, mathematics and programming form an essential part of the work as a future business analytics professional, the focus of the program is to go through theoretical foundation in mathematics and programming.
- Moreover, students will participate in projects where they will apply their knowledge to practical and business oriented case.
- In the upcoming years of studies, students will deepen into the key subjects of the business analytics program.
- Medium of the Program is Fully English.
Program Goal
Considering complexity of the field of philology, the program is designed to:
1. provide the graduate with the knowledge of the conceptual apparatus of linguistics and literary studies, methodological and theoretical foundations, the structure of the English language, the historical dimensions of the English language and the characteristics of British culture, the specifics of the relations between language, thought, society, culture and literature, the concepts and theories of linguistics and literary studies, peculiarities of the development of literary genres;
2. introduce the regularities of the history and development of English and American literature;
3. develop the skills for applying the communicative strategies relevant for the competent use of the English language, comprehending and producing clearly structured complex oral and written texts adequately by considering the basic principles and standards of academic writing style (APA), performing adequate communicative actions in various communicative contexts, as well as for formulating and presenting one’s own critical opinion on complex issues;
4. form the skills for adequate perception and use of relevant grammatical norms and vocabulary for the independent use of the second European (compulsory optional) language;
5. mold the skills for the adequate use of learning, teaching and assessment strategies, methods and approaches;
6. develop a sense of responsibility for one’s own professional development by adhering to the ethical norms and standards of academic honesty in preparing one’s own works (abstract, small research, bachelor’s thesis (mandatory elective)) and representing the results.
The program is in full compliance with the university mission – “to be engaged in the process of knowledge production and person’s education. Here we imply the cultivation of liberal-humane values among people and their provision with the necessary knowledge and skills requisite to success by means of an honest labor “. The mission is attainable due to the standards of academic honesty, practice-based professional activities, as well as due to the scientific advancements supporting sound, human and democratic development of the society to favor eventually well-being of the nation and humankind. Development of the research and practical skills relevant to the Bachelor’s competence, provided by the synthesis of the theoretical and practical courses, supports achievement of the program goals. Student-oriented teaching is aimed at developing creative thinking, meeting the students’ diverse interests and demands, forming the skills required to adhere to the standards of academic honesty, ethical and professional norms, and shaping the skills needed for accepting national and international values. The competences developed in the premises of the program enable the graduate to be employed in publishing houses, the system of the means of mass communication and in the companies where the demand for English-language communicator is evidenced. Considering the changing demands of the labor market, the subjects focused on the development of the English language teaching competences are integrated in the program. The bachelor program of the English Philology provides the students with the knowledge meeting the modern standards of the humanitarian thought and equips future marketable professionals with the extensive knowledge of the philological and adjacent fields. The program provides the graduate with the opportunity to continue studies on the adjacent specialties. The mentioned opportunity is provided by academic staff and educational components integrated in the program.

Knowledge and understanding
After the program completion, the graduate:
Knows:
- The conceptual apparatus, methodological and theoretical fundaments of linguistics and literary studies;
- The structure of the English language, the markers of historical dimensions of the English language and specifics of the British culture;
- The regularities in the history and development of English and American literature;
- The specifics of grammatical norms and vocabulary relevant to the competent use of English and independent use of second European (compulsory elective) language;
- The basic principles of academic writing and (APA) academic style standards;
- Learning, teaching and assessment strategies, approaches, theories and methods;
- The main periods of World History.
Describes:
- The specifics of the relationship between language, society, culture and literature;
- The specifics of the concepts and theories of linguistics and literary studies, as well as the peculiarities of functioning the system of literary theory and the development of literary genres.
Skills
After the program completion, the graduate:
- Analyses and synthesizes the results obtained by applying the methods and principles relevant to the field of philology (the principles of phonemic and morphemic analysis; the method of transformational analysis; the principle of hyponymy; hermeneutical analysis of the text and the principles of literary criticism etc.);
- While producing clearly structured, complex oral and written texts in English, applies relevant communicative strategies, constructs relevant arguments and logically substantiates one’s own critical views on complex issues, conducts adequate communicative activities in different communicative contexts;
- When producing oral and written texts in second European language, consistently describes the events, one’s own experiences and impressions within the framework of a familiar topic with syntactically correct and well-developed meaningful sentences;
- Applies teaching and learning methods and strategies, develops knowledge-based logical judgments about real and hypothetical situations while analyzing the approaches, theories and methods of the professional sphere (Theories of development: Theory of teaching and learning; Behavioral Theories; Theories of cognitive development etc.);
- Searches for the material in different recourses to develop well-grounded conclusions, delivers information to professionals (philologists), as well as non-professionals (general public) by applying modern information technologies in formulating and presenting clearly and consistently the issues relevant to the field of philology.
Responsibility and autonomy
After the program completion, the graduate:
- Realizing the complexity of the field of English philology and adhering to the standards of academic honesty, takes responsibility for professional development by comparing, contrasting, synthesizing and representing the data in the papers prepared by him/her (term paper, small research, bachelor thesis in philology (compulsory optional)).
Teaching Process Characteristics:
The Bachelor program (English Philology) of the School of Humanities at the University of Georgia allocates 240 ECTS credits needed for gaining academic degree in English Philology in the following way:
