DOCTOR OF DENTAL MEDICINE EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM – DENTISTRY
Program details:
- The program has 300 ECTS and includes 5 years of teaching.
- It consists of program compulsory (288 ECTS) and optional (12 ECTS ) components.
- The amount of the ECTS of dental specializations is 126.

Program Goal
The goal of the program is to coach qualified dentists, whose professional activities will help to increase the level of dental services, prevent oral diseases and improve overall health. The graduate of this program will have basic knowledge of oral health care medicine (clinical and natural sciences) and deep knowledge of dental specializations. One will also assimilate dental clinical skills considering professional ethical values. Additionally, the graduate will also have skills of learning and teaching, professional growth-development, research and analysis, decision-making, which allows him to logically analyze identified symptoms and see the connection between common pathogenetic process, reasonably set and implement comprehensive treatment plan, pursue patient’s management, have basic manual skills that ensures both prophylactic and therapeutic activities. After the course completion the graduates will have the right to hold the positions according to the Georgian legislation in dental clinics (junior dentist, dental assistant – Order of the Minister of Labour, Health and Social Affairs ? 01-11 / N 2012, March 14), health care organizations and health insurance providing companies (relations with medical and dental institutions, with the focus on the dental services and dental management of insured people, assistant of the family doctor). Also prepare the student for specialization (residency programs) and the next levels of learning (Master and Doctoral programs). Also hold the positions according to the legislation of various countries.

Knowledge and understanding
Program graduate:
- Describes and determines chemical, biochemical molecular, microbiological and histological processes in human body in both normal and pathological conditions;
- Has in-depth knowledge of human anatomy and physiology.
- Has and demonstrates systemic knowledge of theories of clinical sciences closely related to oral diseases;
- Defines and interprets basic systemic principles and peculiarities of health care service formation, management and operation of the system, disease prevention and their management (sanitary-hygienic requirements, infection control, etc.), healthy life styles and behavior change;
- Has systemic knowledge of research methods (biostatical and eliidemiological);
- Explains and reviews main issues of health care legislation and ethical aspects, patient rights and medical activities;
- Has in-depth knowledge of dental sciences – therapeutic dentistry pediatric dentistry, dental surgery, maxillo-facial surgery, prosthetic dentistry, orthodontics;
- Reviews and defines dental materials and their purpose;
- Has systemic knowledge of diagnostics of oral diseases (taking patient history, performing physical examinations, assessment), aspects of treatment planning and treatment methods considering the respective competences;
- Determines and lists the maniliulations (vena liunctio, stiching the skin and mucous membranes subcutaneous and intramuscular injection, intravenous drug administration, tooth extraction tooth preparation, root canal filling, tooth restoration etc.);
- Has systemic knowledge of treated patients follow-up and outcome maintenance and managment.
- Based on systemic knowledge performs classification of main groups of drugs taking into account mechanisms of their action and interaction;
- Has knowledge of basic diagnostic and medical-preventive principles and methods of diseases, peculiarities of medical records;
- Understands the essence of health and non-medical fields/spheres and importance of their application in professional activity;
- Has the knowledge of the basics of medical psychology, medical physics, biophysics (natural and preformed, physical factors, biophysical mechanisms of impact on the organism etc);
Skills
Program graduate:
- Organizes the diagnosis, prevention and management of oral diseases based on the competencies in therapeutic, orthopedic, surgical dentistry, implantology and pediatric dentistry, and considering peculiarities of various concomitant and chronic diseases;
- Plans and implements basic and alternative public health measures using epidemiological research methods aimed at promotion of oral health;
- Applies guidelines and protocols for performing in new environment appropriate clinical examinations and procedures, using of equipment, selection of drug groups, medical-preventive measures and specialized services. in the field of liublic health and sliecialized services in theralieutic-lireventive measures;
- Applies the evidence-based research findings in decision-making process;
- Collects the history, performs diagnosing and differential diagnosing of main and concomitant diseases and differential diagnosis taking into account main functional indicators of general condition of the body;
- Performs researches in accordance with ethical principles;
- Performs registration of patient data, formation and storage of records according to protocols;
- Provides emergency medical care;
- Provides medical maniliulations (skin dissection, dissection of purulent abscess, venous puncture, suturing the skin and mucosa, subcutaneous and muscular injections, intravenous drug administration, tooth extraction, tooth preparation, tooth root canal treatment, tooth restoration, etc.) and procedures (draining etc.);
- Uses medications safely;
- Critically analyzes patient’s oral health problems, identifies the problem and in conditions of incomplete and/or contradictory data, forms the appropriate conclusion;
- Collects, analyzes and generates individual or public health data related to the oral cavity based on the latest achievements in medicine and develops and substantiates appropriate recommendations;
- Analyzes and evaluates the diagnostic methods and the potential impact of equipment-related biophysical factors on the human body;
- Presents orally and in writing (including electronically) evidence-based proposals, decisions, opinions, conclusions, reports and recommendations in English to academic, professional and non-professional society;
- Informs patients and patients’ relatives, colleagues, and stakeholders on oral health issues;
- Manages professional critical situations;
- Ensures study and independent learning of the most recent thematic issues of in the oral cavity, public health and medicine;
- Maintains with patients and colleagues’ relationships based on ethical values, protects patient’s rights;
Responsibility and autonomy
Program graduate:
- Consistently evaluates own learning process;
- Identifies the needs for further study in the specialties of dentistry;
- Takes into account norms of professional ethics;
Teaching Process Characteristics:
The program consists of theoretical and laboratory teaching, as well as practice, which is implemented within the courses based on the thematic direction. Theoretical lectures can be concurrently conducted in two and more groups. A semester offers curations (rotations) of medical profiles that consider daily and intensive teaching and is organized as in the university campus as well as in the affiliated medical institutions. The students’ number in laboratory and practical groups is not more than 15. The practical training is conducted using mentor system, as for the evaluation of clinical and professional skills the structured (integrated) evaluation system in simulation and clinical setting is used.
